Conservation Planning of Kushak School, Mathura

Project Overview

The project focuses on the conservation planning of Kushak School, a government educational facility with layered historical significance, originating in the British period and extended during the Rajput era. Located within the Kans Qila precinct on a high plinth overlooking the Yamuna River, the site reflects a fragmented spatial character shaped by successive phases of development. The scope includes comprehensive documentation and condition assessment to inform a sensitive and context-responsive conservation approach.

Role, Responsibilities & Outcome

As Conservation Architects, our work includes documentation, analysis, and planning to understand the site and its evolution. This involves detailed architectural documentation, identification of historic and later materials, and structural assessment through site investigations and archival research. Condition mapping is carried out to record structural, masonry, and surface deterioration, including elements of architectural and aesthetic significance. The team also coordinates structural testing and technical studies to ensure accurate documentation of existing conditions. Based on these studies, conservation strategies and preliminary cost estimates are developed in coordination with specialist consultants. The project aims to support the preservation and upgradation of the school infrastructure, enabling continued use while retaining its historical character and context
