Project Overview
The project involved the preparation of a Tourism Development Plan for the cultural heritage landscape of Khajuraho, intending to develop it as an iconic tourist destination. The scope focused on establishing a long-term vision and framework for holistic development, integrating both physical (hard) and programmatic (soft) interventions. The plan aimed to support sustainable tourism growth while ensuring the protection and enhancement of the site’s cultural and heritage values.
Role, Responsibilities & Outcome
As Conservation Architects, our work included site visits, heritage assessment, and cultural mapping to understand the significance and spatial distribution of heritage assets. The scope involved reviewing the existing infrastructure and tourism scenario, preparing inventories of heritage resources, and conducting gap assessments related to heritage management and visitor experience.
Secondary data collection and benchmarking through case studies were undertaken to inform the planning approach. The team carried out site analysis and developed heritage precincts to structure the planning framework. Concept proposals and schematic layout plans were prepared to integrate heritage resources within the broader development vision.
The impact of proposed interventions on heritage assets was assessed, and mitigation strategies were developed to ensure sensitive integration of development within the historic context. The project contributed to the formulation of a strategic framework for sustainable tourism development, prioritizing phased implementation of projects while aligning with conservation principles and long-term growth objectives.
