Project Overview
The Adarsh Smarak initiative, launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2014, aimed to enhance visitor experience across 100 ASI-protected monuments in India. The project focused on upgrading essential infrastructure and amenities to transform heritage sites into accessible, visitor-friendly environments while preserving their cultural integrity. Key interventions included sanitation facilities, drinking water, cafeterias, interpretation centers, improved waste management systems, and universal accessibility features such as ramps and braille signage.
Role, Responsibilities & Outcome
As a Conservation Consultant with NBCC, I undertook comprehensive site surveys and visitor data analysis to inform context-sensitive design interventions across multiple heritage locations. My role involved preparing gap assessment reports, developing concept layout plans, and producing detailed working drawings for proposed infrastructure upgrades. I curated material palettes and façade treatments aligned with the historic character of each site, while also incorporating traditional construction techniques into the design process.
Additionally, I reviewed 3D visualizations to ensure design accuracy and coherence. Through these contributions, the project successfully enhanced visitor amenities and accessibility, creating inclusive and well-managed heritage environments while safeguarding their cultural and architectural significance, ultimately supporting increased tourism and improved user experience.
